I’ve been writing much about Sponge Cola for the past few months. But we’ll dismiss for a while those ‘XGF’ stuff. It’s time for ‘Mahaba Pa Ang Gabi’, their latest offering from the latest album District. While being stuck on the band’s similar vein of tunes on the past mid-decade (particularly the first two albums) I feel a sudden surge of re-falling in love with the group. Admit it, the third one and beyond is quite mediocre. But with District, these guys seem to be back on the right track. ‘Mahaba pa..’, to the very least, is not as annoying as some of those self-titled Sponge Cola album and Araw Oras Tagpuan tracks.
Up Dharma Down is set to release their comeback album Capacities in a few days armoured with a relatively dancey tune, ‘Turn It Well’, as the carrier single. This is a smart move as to the group detaching themselves from the usual weepy trend of tunes. Though, those ‘Tadhana’, ‘Oo’, and ‘Kaibigan’ days are very much appreciated. Btw, seeing them live for the first time during the Tanduay Rock Fest performing this gem proved that love-at-first-hear do exist.
After the phenomenal success of the smash hit ‘Sirena’ in collaboration with Ebe Dancel, Gloc 9 teams up with Billy Crawford this time for ‘Bakit Hindi’, a relatively weaker one on that line up of Gloc 9 golden opuses hitting the country by storm, one after the other. The single is simply not as interesting as the other ones. As expected, the lyrics is still well-written though the radio-friendly-appeal is quite missing, which of course, is not really a good thing. On a side note, MKNM just turned gold.
Oh I've been so out for our local music scenes. It's not that I only knew few OPM songs, the reason is because I don't have time really to soak myself listening to it. I just realized na di na pala ako nakakarinig ng musika (even international ones). My bad. I'm outdated really. But thanks to this post. I'm constantly updated somehow. Nga pala napakinggan ko yung "sirena" ba yon. It's nice though. Full of meaning.
ReplyDeleteThat's okay Sir Jay. Perks of being a father. More time for the baby/ and the family.

ReplyDeleteI am a HUGE UpDharmaDown fan, so excited for their new album :) Glad you had a love at first hear experience with them :)
ReplyDeleteI did actually quite like Sponge Cola and Araw Oras Tagpuan, primarily because they at least tried to get away from their "comfort zone". But the, that's just me. I'd probably be bored with them if all their albums sounded like..."Palabas". As long as they don't do K-popish song, I'm okay with them. LOL
ReplyDeletetagal ko pa pala di nakikinig ng OPM
ReplyDeleteeraserhead days pa
hehe
Woohoo. Waiting for Up Dharma Down!
